The American PastimeWelcome to the homepage of the Lords of the Rink (LOTR) hockey league. LOTR is an Action! PC Hockey league replaying the glory days of the "Original Six" era with an eye towards moving through the Expansion Era and beyond!

The LOTR began with the 1957-58 season and will continue to move forward through history, with expansion planned to coincide with the actual expansions of the NHL.

From Gordie Howe to Jacques Plante, all the stars of the Original Six era are present in the league - though not necessarily with their historical club. LOTR pays homage to these greats by reliving their feats on the ice through the APC Hockey sim engine.

If you are interested in being a part of the LOTR, please feel free to contact the commissioner through the Info link.

1958-59 Season Recap

THE BIG THREE LEAD THE HABS TO THE CUP

Montreal reached the Cup Finals in 1958, but the Habs fell short against the Detroit Red Wings and star winger Gordie Howe. That wouldn't be the case in 1958-59 as the trio of Dickie Moore, Jean Beliveau and Bernie Geoffrion powered Montreal to a 93-point regular season and ultimately to the Cup that had eluded them the year before.

Moore was the league's MVP after topping the loop in points with 92 - barely besting defending scoring champ Howe (91 points) with 41 goals and 51 assists. Beliveau led in goals with 46 and the third spoke in the Canadiens wheel - Geoffrion - led the league in assists. Overall the Habs put the puck in the net 235 times, second only to a rising Toronto team that scored a blistering 243 times and finished second with a 38-24-8 record.

The postseason saw the Habs exact revenge on the Wings, erasing Detroit four games to one to reach the Finals where they met the surprising Chicago Black Hawks. Chicago had barely made the playoffs, finishing tied with Boston for fourth place with 61 points, and getting in by virtue of having 24 victories against the Bruins' 21. But the Hawks somehow managed to squeeze past the Maple Leafs who had the league's best offense and posted the league's best scoring differential at +70 on the year. Still, Chicago managed to not only squeeze past the Leafs in seven games, but then pushed the Canadiens to seven before falling in the final game.

1957-58 Season Recap

AND HOWE! GORDIE LEADS THE WINGS TO FIRST LOTR CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Detroit Red Wings were, for nearly the entire season, clearly the best club in the league. And the main reason for that was the dominant one-two punch of Gordie Howe (who led the league in goals with 49 - 12 more than Montreal's Jean Beliveau) and goalie Terry Sawchuk (who posted six shutouts and finished second to only Montreal's Jacques Plante in save percentage).

The Wings followed up their outstanding regular season (45-19-6 record) with an exciting Cup win over the nearly-as-dominant Montreal Canadiens. The Habs posted a 39-17-14 mark behind Jean Beliveau's outstanding season (37 goals, 48 assists to finish one point behind Howe for the scoring title) with plenty of support from Dickie Moore (77 points) and top-notch netminding from the best in the business: Jacques Plante and his league-best .927 save percentage.
