5-for-6 Day for Van den Berg
Atlanta center fielder Bert Van den Berg added his name to the record books with a 5-hit spree at Riverbend Park, but found his special moment spoiled when the Montgomery Moccasins took a shootout win, 20-15, over the Firebirds.

"I would have much preferred getting only a couple of hits and winning the game," he confessed to reporters afterward. "It's hard to go back into the clubhouse and celebrate a 5-hit game when you also lost."

Firebirds manager Mark O'Doherty called Van den Berg's game "a once-in-a-lifetime moment."

"It's a shame the guy can't really enjoy it," the skipper said. "It's also a shame what happened with our pitching, but at least that we can try to fix."

Bert Van den Berg singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, hit a three-run triple in the 6th, walked in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off Tommy Lloyd in the 9th.

Posting a .373 batting average to date, Van den Berg has 3 home runs and 33 RBIs.
