Hits Galore: Ashby Drills 5 Hits
It doesn't happen very often, but it did for Newton Ashby -- a 5-hit effort. He went on a rampage at Lakefront Grounds and paced the 16-6 Bears win over the Brooklyn Unions.

After his dynamite batting performance, the Cleveland center fielder told reporters that he "just tried to get in a good count and have a good at-bat. That's all I can control."

His philosophy paid dividends today. He slammed 5 hits in 6 tries and put his name in the record book. Newton Ashby doubled in the 1st, flied out in the 2nd, hit a two-run double in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.
