The Philadelphia Unions rode a solid performance from 29-year-old starting pitcher Thomas Goss to a win, beating the St. Louis Pioneers, 6-2, at Girard Grounds. The second-place Unions are 66-45.

Philadelphia took a 6-2 lead on Clipper Smith's 17th double of the season. The bases-clearing double, which Smith hit in the bottom of the eighth, left St. Louis pitcher Wilton Strickland shaking his head.

"We're in a marathon, not a sprint," Goss said in postgame remarks. "Soon enough, the finish line will be in sight."
