Excelsiors Suffer 2-1 Setback
The Boston Brahmins got a stellar effort from pitcher Peter Gates, helping Boston score a win over the visiting New York Excelsiors, 2-1, in 11 innings. Gates yielded 1 run over 11 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. His record improves to 27-27. The Brahmins are now 60-71.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th, an error by the Excelsiors allowed the Brahmins to score the winning run.

"To not win that game stings a little bit," said New York manager .
