Vulcans Topple Excelsiors, 5-1
The Pittsburgh Vulcans downed the New York Excelsiors, 5-1, at Excelsior Grounds. Stellar pitching by Bob Newton had a lot to do with it. The right-hander, who is on pace to win 24 games this season, handcuffed his opponent all game. Pittsburgh is now 41-46, while New York is 51-36.

Pittsburgh won the game in part because of Paul Trail. The first baseman ripped a run-scoring double in the top of the first inning to put the Vulcans ahead, 1-0. For the game, Trail had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.

"You want to go out there and put up zeroes, that's the main thing," said Newton. "You don't want to get caught in one of those back-and-forth, run-for-run games."
