| St. Louis Extends Series Lead in Low-Scoring Affair | When the stakes were high, Bulldog Ayers raised his game to match.
The right-handed Ayers turned in a stellar performance in Game 2 of the Round 1, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the St. Louis Pilots to victory. He allowed 6 hits and struck out 3. The win gave St. Louis a 2-0 lead over the Louisville Colts in the best-of-7 series.
Ayers, who was born in Lonaconing, Maryland, threw 108 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing 2 runs.
"Coach said he wanted eight innings, so I decided to do him one better," Ayers said later.
Game 3 is scheduled for Monday at Derby Grounds in Louisville.
