The Indianapolis Westerners weathered a fine game by Pittsburgh shortstop Gary Vankirk to upend the Vulcans, 8-6, at Vulcan Grounds. Vankirk was 2-3 with a double and a walk, while scoring 2 times. John Harrison, 1-2, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. With the win over Pittsburgh, the Westerners improved to 17-31.

Indianapolis used the timely hitting of Bruce Riley to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Westerners on top, 8-6. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"No time for posing," said Riley. "The next game will be here before you know it."
