| New York Defeated by Boston, 3-2 | Boston Brahmins starter Peter Gates turned in a sterling performance against the New York Excelsiors, leading his team to a slim, 3-2 win. The Brahmins are now 15-29, while the Excelsiors fall to 16-28.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Brahmins had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when shortstop Cecil Mathews hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Bill Nolette and made the score 3-1, Brahmins. Mathews was 1 for 4.
