Excelsiors Get Clutch 6-5 Win | The New York Excelsiors picked up a win at Excelsior Grounds, downing the Indianapolis Stars, 6-5. On the mound for New York was right-hander Candy Lemmons, who played a pivotal role in the win. By defeating Indianapolis, the first-place Excelsiors improved to 47-27.
Batting in the bottom of the ninth, 26-year old left fielder Clipper Smith had a real shot to win the game. Indianapolis pitcher Charlie James was determined not to let it happen. But with two outs, Smith hit a run-scoring single. The Excelsiors had a walk-off triumph.
"I had a good game plan," said Lemmons. "I made my pitches." His manager concurred. "It was all there," said, "the velocity, the sharpness of his pitches." | | | | |
