Ajax McFadden, who finished 4th in the IA in on-base percentage with .360 in 1885, propelled his team to victory over the New York Excelsiors. The final score was 8-7, St. Louis. The first-place Pilots, at 68-22, now lead their division by 13 games.

The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Jasper Hines came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing New York pitcher Eddie Montague, he hit a 2-2 slider for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting St. Louis on top, 8-7.

"Ajax was bobbing and weaving the whole game," said St. Louis manager .
