Bells Lose to Washington, 6-1
Washington picked up a win at Independence Grounds, bumping off the Philadelphia Bells, 6-1. Pitcher John Kershaw was a major reason the Columbians emerged victorious. Kershaw, now 7-10, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 4, walking 2, and allowing 1 run. The 7th-place Columbians lifted their record to 9-18.

Washington used the hitting of Henry Hughes to pick up the win. The left fielder clubbed a 2-run single in the top of the first inning to put the Columbians on top, 2-0. For the game, Hughes had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"John pounded the strike zone and made good pitches when he needed to," said Washington manager .
