| Burchett Touches All the Bases, Hits for Cycle Thursday, October 2nd , 1884 It was a special day for Spider Burchett at Summit Street Park. Not only did Burchett's Montreal Tigers beat the Toledo Toms, 7-6, but the center fielder hit for the cycle along the way.
The 21-year-old Burchett racked up 1 single, 1 double, 1 triple and 1 home run to get his name in the record books. For the game, he went 4-for-5 with 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.
"He hit everything we threw," said Toms manager . "There was just no getting him out today."
Speaking to the press after the game, Burchett said his goal for the day had been to look for "first pitch fastballs."
"I got some good looks today," he said.
Spider Burchett doubled in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Bill Silvers in the 2nd, grounded out in the 4th, tripled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
This year, Burchett has socked 129 hits in 437 at-bats for a .295 average with 8 home runs. He is getting on base at a .350 pace and his totals also include 70 RBIs and 66 runs scored.
