| Vigorous Exercise Leads to Grief for Helm Monday, October 1st , 1877 It has often been remarked that no player takes better care of himself than Harry Helm. His devotion during the offseason to conditioning himself for the rigors of the coming campaign are the stuff of legends. During the season, the Detroit Woodwards's left fielder observes regular habits, exercises with moderation, and carefully attends to his stomach and liver. He does not, however, indulge in heavy work or feats of strength, as it is agility and suppleness of body that Helm firmly believes are the ball player's greatest assets. There was no small amount of surprise, then, that attended reports of Helm having strained a muscle while working out with Indian clubs at a local gymnasium. That will cost him at least five days of recuperation before he can return to action. The veteran knows he should have been more careful. "A muffin's mistake," Helm was heard to remark as he lamented his avoidable injury. Perhaps next time he will leave the heavy lifting to the porters at the team hotel. | | |
