Pilots Shut Out by Gates, 8-0
Wednesday, September 21st , 1887
Peter Gates dominated the St. Louis Pilots with a brilliant 4-hit shutout in the 8-0 Boston Brahmins triumph at Brahmins Grounds. The Boston hurler fanned 5 and walked 1 in the game and was singled out for praise afterward by the opposing manager.

"He really kept us in check today," Pilots skipper said in postgame comments. "Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away. We took some pathetic swings."

This season, Gates has a 25-26 mark in 53 starts with a 3.59 ERA. He has given up 429 hits in 436.1 innings, struck out 134 and issued 174 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .255 batting average against him.
