Gates Fires Shutout in Brahmins Victory
Thursday, August 30th , 1888
All went well for Peter Gates of the Boston Brahmins as he pitched his team to a shutout victory, 3-0, over the Cincinnati Monarchs, limiting them to 4 hits. In the postgame interview, both managers had glowing things to say about Gates on the day.

"Peter's got a good selection of pitches he can throw at a guy," said Brahmins manager . "He changes speed, gives different looks to different hitters. When he's on his game, he's quite a handful."

In the contest, the Boston right-hander rang up 6 and surrendered 2 walks.

"He didn't give us any second chances," said Monarchs manager . "It's a guessing game with him and today we were always guessing wrong."

Gates has gone 24-14 this season with an ERA of 2.28 and 149 strikeouts in 320 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .193 against him.
