They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 4-0. Boston managed only 6 hits off Appling, who had no strikeouts. The extraordinarily popular Appling got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd. "Blue Caps fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible." Appling has started 22 times this year, pitched 194.1 innings, fanned 44 batters and walked 10. His current record is 13 wins and 9 losses with a 1.44 ERA.
