Stone Rips Providence for 5 Hits
Thursday, August 30th , 1888
Hartford left fielder Ernie Stone could do no wrong in his team's 9-5 win over the Planters, as he collected 5 hits.

"Things were in his favor in every one of his at-bats," Planters skipper said to the press corps after the game. "He got hitters' counts."

Stone agreed, saying that getting ahead early in the counts was "the key" to his game.

"Once you get ahead, it makes it a lot easier because you get a better pitch to hit," he said. "You know the pitcher has to come in with it. And you're ready."

Ernie Stone doubled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and doubled in the 9th.

At present, Stone is batting .327 and has collected 5 home runs, 43 RBIs, .360 OBP and scored 44 runs.
