The 1888 season did not get off to quite the start the Toronto Provincials had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Kansas City Prairie Dogs at Garrison Common Grounds. The final score was 6-5. First Baseman Jim Scott was the top performer for Kansas City. Kansas City pitcher Bill Nolette earned the win, hiking his record to 1-0. Glen Nalley suffered the loss.

In the top of the ninth, Kansas City left fielder Curt Johnston had a productive at-bat. With a runner on 3rd and no one out, Johnston stroked a run-scoring single to center. It made the score 6-2, Kansas City. For the game, he was 2 for 4 with 2 singles.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Johnston, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
