| Unions Snatch Late-Game, 9-8 Win | Dave Greene did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the Detroit Sturgeons from being beaten, 9-8, to the Philadelphia Unions at Riverside Park. Greene went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. The winner was Philadelphia reliever Bancroft King, now 1-0. The loser was Cy Verret. Philadelphia, now 7-11, is off to a slow start.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Mike McCord came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Detroit pitcher Palmer Cherry, he hit a 3-1 changeup for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Philadelphia on top, 9-8.
"We're a talented bunch when we're playing well," said McCord. "I think we showed that here."
