The Washington Federals defeated the Philadelphia Unions, 13-10, at Girard Grounds. Will Hickman, who led the FL in batting average with .340 in 1878, was a standout performer for Washington. His 3 hits included 1 single and 2 doubles -- this in addition to the 3 runs he scored and 2 he knocked in. Washington reliever Woody Ross snagged the win, upping his record to 1-0. Bancroft King shouldered the loss. Albie Scott, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 1st save.

The game was all tied up in the top of the tenth, until Hickman delivered big-time for Washington, stroking a dramatic 2-run double off Bancroft King. The game-changing hit put the Federals on top, 12-10.

"We took advantage of our opportunities," Hickman told the Washington Gazette. "It's as simple as that."

The last-place Federals own a record of 5-24.
