The St. Louis Pilots weathered a fine game by Toronto center fielder James Richardson to upend the Provincials, 5-4, at Fuchs Park. Richardson was 4-4 with 4 singles. He drove in 3 runs. Bulldog Ayers, who is tied for 6th in the IA with a 2.65 ERA, was the winner. He's now 25-10. The loser was Glen Nalley. By defeating Toronto, the first-place Pilots improved to 73-39.

The game was at a stalemate until pitcher Bulldog Ayers came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Toronto pitcher Glen Nalley, he hit a first pitch knuckleball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting St. Louis on top, 5-4.

"If the personal accolades come, so be it," said Ayers. "I just want to win ballgames."
