Federals Score Late, Topple Barons, 5-2
At Columbia Field, the New York Barons and Washington Federals were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd.

Washington turned a good performance from starting pitcher Norm Schmitt into a 5-2 triumph over the New York Barons at Columbia Field. In 9 innings, Schmitt surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. He allowed 2 runs.

Dick Stubbs went 1 for 3 with a double for Washington. With one out and the game tied in the top of the eighth inning, Stubbs, who finished 4th in the FL in extra base hits with 33 in 1880, had a clutch at-bat. Facing New York hurler Jack McKinley, he hit a sacrifice fly to give the Federals a 3-2 lead.

"That's how you're going to be successful," said Federals manager . "It starts with pitching and it will always be pitching."

The last-place Federals improved to 41-75.
