Read Excels, But Monarchs Win
The Cincinnati Monarchs had to overcome a big game from Toronto catcher Standpipe Read to leave Garrison Common Grounds with a victory. And they did, winning, 8-5. Read was 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Dave Eyler converted his 3rd save in 3 tries. The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Will Bowling came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Toronto pitcher Henry Clancy, he hit a 1-0 curveball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Cincinnati on top, 6-5.

"There's a lot in this game you can't control. Just take what the game gives you. I was just doing my best to help the team win," Bowling told the Cincinnati Chronicle.
