Sturgeons Claim Late Win
The Indianapolis Westerners could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Wilton Strickland into a win. Instead, the Detroit Sturgeons prevailed, 5-3. Strickland threw 9.0 innings of 2-hit ball. Palmer Cherry, the winner, is now 6-5. He struck out 4 and walked 2 over 7 innings, while allowing 3 runs on 7 hits. The Sturgeons own a robust 32-17 mark.

Joe Cavender provided a timely hit. The Detroit center fielder delivered a bases-clearing triple in the top of the eighth inning to put the Sturgeons on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in the game, but he made it count.
