Monarchs 4-3 Victors Over Toronto
Starting pitcher Ashton Slake pitched well enough to help the Cincinnati Monarchs beat the Toronto Provincials, 4-3. The Provincials drop to 9-10 and continue their mediocre start to the 1888 season.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the bottom of the seventh, with the game tied, Thaddeus Harlan was at the plate when Cincinnati scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Monarchs to go in front, 4-3.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Slake told a Cincinnati Chronicle reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
