| Bird Sharp, Blanks Barons, 2-0 | The New York Barons ran into a buzzsaw at Riverside Park, as Detroit Sturgeons starter Martin Bird cut them down to size, 2-0, tossing a 5-hit shutout.
"That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," Sturgeons manager told reporters after the game. "Martin knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."
In the complete game win, the Detroit hurler doled out 1 walk and registered 5 strikeouts.
Bird has posted a 12-9 record for the year with a 2.99 ERA. Teams are hitting .262 against him and he has rung up 92 strikeouts in 198.1 innings. | | | | |
