Excelsiors Rally to Eke Out Win
The New York Excelsiors overcame a pretty good performance by Pittsburgh second baseman Walter Blasingame, beating the Vulcans, 9-8, in 11 innings. Blasingame was 4-5 with a triple, a double, and 2 singles. He scored 2 times. Candy Lemmons was the winner. He's now 22-16. The loser was 28-year old right-handed pitcher Dennis Catchings. New York is first in the International Association with a record of 36-21.

The game was at a stalemate until pitcher Candy Lemmons came to bat in the top of the 11th. Facing Pittsburgh pitcher Lloyd Helms, he hit a 1-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 9-8.

"What a game," said Lemmons. "We needed every last run."
