| Boston Blanks Cincinnati, Ross Winner Sunday, August 10th , 1884 There was no spell, no black magic -- just good pitching.
Woody Ross of the Boston Brahmins blanked the Cincinnati Dutchmen, 1-0, at Brahmins Grounds, and he did it the old-fashioned way. After finishing the 5-hit, complete-game shutout, he was all smiles.
"I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game," Ross said. "I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."
Ross walked 1 and struck out 4 in the victory.
"He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes," Dutchmen manager said later.
On the season, Ross has compiled a 12-13 mark with a 2.04 ERA in 26 starts. In pitching 238.1 innings he has 173 strikeouts and 43 walks while limiting the opposition to a .222 batting average.
