James Spins 3-0 Shutout
Friday, August 22nd , 1884
Will James shut out the Philadelphia Bells, 3-0, on a 3-hit masterpiece for the Boston Brahmins at Independence Grounds.

"He was kind of teasing them with his off-speed stuff, and his fastball was moving everywhere," Boston skipper said afterward.

James registered 7 strikeouts and issued no walks in pitching a gem.

"We just didn't swing the bats very well. Or else he just pitched good, whichever way you want to look at it," said Philadelphia manager after the defeat.

James has made 45 starts, tossed 416.2 innings, struck out 355 batters and walked 9. His record is 29-13 with a 1.36 ERA and he has limited other teams to a .207 batting average.
