O’Connell Torches Patriots for 5 Hits
Saturday, August 22nd , 1896
It's not something you read about in the sports pages every day -- a 5-for-6 day. For many, it might come around only once in a career -- and for Charles O’Connell, it came around today.

The 28-year-old center fielder scattered hits all over Founders Grounds to pace the 7-6 Toronto Dominions victory over the Providence Patriots.

Providence skipper Kevin Ord told reporters in the press room that "O’Connell deserves a hat-tip."

"He hit some good pitches against us," he said. "In fact, according to our scouting reports, O’Connell hit several that he is not supposed to be able to hit."

Charles O’Connell hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

O’Connell is batting at a .263 pace this season, picking up 90 hits in 342 at-bats with 2 home runs, 28 RBIs and 38 runs scored.
