| Davis Baffles Richmond Batters Thursday, August 19th , 1886 Stan Davis led the New Orleans Creoles to a shutout victory, 1-0, over the Richmond Rebels at Basin Street Park.
"My pitching coach told me before the game just to bear down and focus," Davis recalled later. "He said no one was going to hit me if I'm throwing a good breaking ball with good location."
Davis yielded 5 hits and had 9 strikeouts and 2 walks in the standout performance.
"I thought he put the ball where he wanted to," Richmond manager said. "And that's just about the whole secret to pitching."
