| Hammell Twirls 4-0 Shutout Monday, September 20th , 1886 Ewald Hammell dominated the Durham Tobacconists with a brilliant 3-hit shutout in the 4-0 Birmingham Vulcans triumph at Bull Grounds. The Birmingham hurler fanned 5 and walked 2 in the game and was singled out for praise afterward by the opposing manager.
"He really kept us in check today," Tobacconists skipper said in postgame comments. "Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away. We took some pathetic swings."
So far this year, Hammell has made 32 starts, tossed 281.1 innings, struck out 143 batters and walked 87. His record is 17-15 with a 4.35 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .272 batting average. | | |
