| Oakley Crafts 5-0 Shutout Monday, August 31st , 1896 The Birmingham Smokers were almost helpless in their 5-0 loss to the Nashville Stones and hurler Walter Oakley. Oakley kept the Smokers confused all game, spinning a 11-hit shutout.
"Tip your hat to Oakley," Birmingham manager Bob Goble said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."
The 23-year-old right-hander had 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in a strong performance.
"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Oakley said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."
This season, Oakley has gone 12-27 with an ERA of 2.40, posting 226 strikeouts in 311.1 innings.
