| Hit Streak Over, Gulls Stop Jackson Wednesday, September 9th , 1896 Late in the game, all eyes in Bayou Field were on Jimmy Jackson as he stepped into the batter box. His 23-game hitting streak was on the line, and he had a zero in the hit column on the day. Sadly for Jackson, it was not meant to be -- the zero would stay and the streak would end.
If there was a silver lining for Jackson, it was that his Houston Eagles won the game anyway, stopping the Galveston Gulls by the score of 12-10.
"Winning took some of the disappointment out of it," Jackson told reporters in the clubhouse. "Looking back on it, it was a great experience. Not too many players can say they had a hit in 23 straight games. It's something I will always remember."
This season, Jackson has 4 home runs and a .376 batting average. | | |
