Barons Earn Late Win | Martin Bird was nothing short of phenomenal for the New York Barons. The 25-year-old right-hander was a big reason his team beat the Washington Federals, 2-1. Bird, who led the FL in ERA with 2.34 in 1883, went the distance for New York. He gave up 1 run on 7 hits. The victory puts New York at 15-22.
Had Cornbread Collins not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Collins hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Barons.
"Martin made the big pitches when he needed to," said New York manager . | | | | |
