The Detroit Sturgeons rode a solid performance from 26-year-old starting pitcher Martin Bird to a win, beating the Philadelphia Unions, 5-1, at Girard Grounds II. The second-place Sturgeons sport a record of 75-39.

Detroit used a well-timed hit by Harry Ransom to capture the win. The catcher socked a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Sturgeons ahead, 3-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

"I felt like I had pretty good command of mostly everything," said Bird.
