| Federals, Schmitt Silence Detroit, 4-0 | The Detroit Sturgeons had no answer for Washington Federals pitcher Norm Schmitt. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 4-0. Detroit managed only 3 hits off Schmitt, who had 3 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Schmitt got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Federals fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
This season, Schmitt has fashioned a 1-6 mark and 3.38 ERA in 58.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .258 against him and he has logged 20 strikeouts. | | | | |
