Nelson Reaches 1000
The Indianapolis 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh wasn't all bad. Something good came out it, at least for Kermit Nelson. As a consolation prize he got the 1000th hit of his career. The veteran Westerners shortstop went 2-for-5 in the game and added his name to the coveted 1000-hit club. He was given a five-minute ovation by the crowd, which included his wife and family and quite a few former Westerners teammates.

"I could have scripted it better," Nelson commented to the press after the game, "a win would have made it a lot more enjoyable. But what the hey... hit #1000 ain't so bad."

Over his career Nelson is batting .277 with 10 home runs and 378 RBIs. In 833 games he has delivered 1000 hits, scored 565 runs, stolen 164 bases and gotten on base at a .316 clip.
