The Philadelphia Unions started the 1888 season win an impressive 6-5 win against the Chicago Cyclones at Girard Grounds II. Thomas Goss, who finished 2nd in the FL in strikeouts with 249 in 1885, led the way for Philadelphia.

John Casey had a key at-bat with one out in the bottom of the fifth for Philadelphia. With a runner on 3rd and the Unions leading 5-3, he grounded out, driving in 1 run.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Philadelphia manager .
