Thanks in large part to left fielder Carl Collins, the New York Excelsiors beat the Pittsburgh Vulcans, 8-6. Collins was 2-4 with a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. New York is now 6-4.

New York used the timely hitting of Steve Monson to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Excelsiors on top, 7-6. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"It was a solid team effort," said Collins after the game.
