The Pittsburgh Vulcans picked up a win at Derby Grounds, knocking off the Louisville Colts, 5-3. On the mound for Pittsburgh was right-hander George Ashe. He played a key role in the triumph. In 11 innings, Ashe surrendered 10 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. He allowed 3 runs. The loss makes Louisville 44-20.

The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Gary Vankirk came to bat in the top of the 11th. Facing Louisville pitcher Kip Hereford, he hit a 2-0 curveball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Pittsburgh on top, 4-3.

"I'm not out there for personal accomplishments," Vankirk told a Pittsburgh Bulletin reporter after the game. "I'm out there to help the team win, and that's what we did today."
