The Toronto Provincials scooped up a win at Garrison Common Grounds, dumping the St. Louis Pilots, 5-2. Henry Clancy, who finished 5th in the IA in ERA with 2.52 in 1883, was essential to his team's success. Toronto is 24-18 and St. Louis, with the loss, 25-16.

The game was at a stalemate until catcher Standpipe Read came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing St. Louis pitcher Will James, he hit a 2-1 curveball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Toronto on top, 3-2.

"I'm just trying to make sure I'm focused for each and every pitch," said Clancy.
