| Unions Trip Westerners, 3-1 | The Philadelphia Unions went home winners at Western Grounds, thanks in large part to starter Jack Malley. Malley stifled the Indianapolis Westerners, enabling Philadelphia to grab the 3-1 win. Malley got the win, improving to 22-11. He gave up 6 hits and walked 1 over 9 innings. He allowed 1 run. The third-place Unions hiked their record to 60-47.
Alexander Faulk, who finished 5th in the FL in triples with 13 in 1886, had a direct impact on the outcome. Faulk contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the ninth inning to put Philadelphia up, 3-1.
"Makes our job easier," said Faulk, "when our pitchers shut the opposition down."
