Bird Holds Vulcans Scoreless
Sunday, September 4th , 1887
Martin Bird shut out the Pittsburgh Vulcans, 1-0, on a 3-hit masterpiece for the Detroit Sturgeons at Vulcan Grounds.

"He was kind of teasing them with his off-speed stuff, and his fastball was moving everywhere," Detroit skipper said afterward.

Bird registered 5 strikeouts and issued 2 walks in pitching a gem.

"We just didn't swing the bats very well. Or else he just pitched good, whichever way you want to look at it," said Pittsburgh manager after the defeat.

To date Bird is 20-13 in 36 starts with a 2.80 ERA and has 151 strikeouts in 311.1 innings.
