 | Bird Holds Vulcans Scoreless Sunday, September 4th , 1887 Martin Bird shut out the Pittsburgh Vulcans, 1-0, on a 3-hit masterpiece for the Detroit Sturgeons at Vulcan Grounds. "He was kind of teasing them with his off-speed stuff, and his fastball was moving everywhere," Detroit skipper said afterward. Bird registered 5 strikeouts and issued 2 walks in pitching a gem. "We just didn't swing the bats very well. Or else he just pitched good, whichever way you want to look at it," said Pittsburgh manager after the defeat.
