| Emerson Stops Atlanta Monday, August 24th , 1896 George Emerson of the Birmingham Smokers was masterful, pitching a 1-hit shutout, 16-0, against the Atlanta Firebirds.
By going the distance, he was at the same time able to give his bullpen a rest, a fact appreciated by Birmingham manager Bob Goble.
"It's nice to have someone who can do that from time to time," he said. "He had command of every ball and every pitch. Great location, too."
Emerson had 9 strikeouts and no walks in the outing.
This year, Emerson has worked 301 innings with 150 strikeouts en route to a 29-5 record and 2.54 ERA.
