 | Newly 5-for-7 Against Maroons Wednesday, August 26th , 1896 Today at Claiborne Grounds, the New Orleans Maroons topped the Montgomery Moccasins in spite of a standout batting performance by first baseman Bill Newly. Newly had a very impressive day at the plate, spanking New Orleans pitching for 5 base hits, but couldn't do enough for a win. New Orleans whipped Montgomery by the score of 23-22. Bill Newly grounded out in the 1st, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 4th, tripled in the 5th, hit a three-run triple in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and flied out in the 9th. This year, Newly has socked 149 hits in 405 at-bats for a .368 average with 7 home runs. He is getting on base at a .439 pace and his totals also include 90 RBIs and 81 runs scored.
